let the right  triangle ABC have AB and BC as two legs of triangle and their length will be AB=BC=x

hypotenuse=12 inches

so according to Pythagoras theorem:-

Hypotenuse^2 = Perpendicular^2 + Base^2

(AB)^2 + (BC)^2 =(AC)^2

x^2+x^2=12^2

2x^2=144

x^2=144/2

x^2=72

x=square root of 72

x=8.48 inch      (length of legs of triangle)
