Let the longer piece be x

And, shorter piece be y

Then, x + y = 12 …..1

And, x = 3y + 4 …..2

Now by substitution method:

Putting value of x from equation to equation 1, we get

3y + 4 + y = 12

4y = 12 -4

4y = 8

y = 8/4

y = 2

Now, putting value of y in equation 2, we get

x = 3(2) + 4

x = 6 + 4

x = 10

Thus, longer piece is 10 ft long and shorter piece is 2 ft long .
