let the larger number =x and smaller number=y

according to the question, difference of the numbers is 15

x-y=15…………(1)

Five times the smaller is the same as 9 less than twice the larger

5y=2x-9

2x-5y-9=0

2x-5y=9……………..(2)

from equation 1, x=15+y…………..(3)

put the value of x in the equation 2

2x-5y=9

2(15+y)-5y=9

30+2y-5y=9

-3y=9-30

-3y=-21

y=21/ 3

y=7        (smaller number)

put the value of y in equation 3 to get the value of x

x=15+y

x=15+7

x=22   (larger number)
