Let x be the time drove by Carlos

and, y be the time drove by Maria

Formula :

Distance = Speed * time

Then, according to question

x + y = 4.4 …1

55x + 50y = 233 ….2

From equation 1,

x = 4.4 - y

putting value of x in equation 2 , we get

55(4.4 - y) + 50y = 233

242 -55y + 50y = 233

5y = 242 - 233

5y = 9

y = 9/5

y = 1.95 hours

Hence, Maria drove for 1.95 hours.
