Given the statement:

A number is divided by 6. Then 8 is added to the quotient. Next 3 is subtracted from the sum. The result is 7

Determine the number.

Solution:

The given statement can be represented as,

(x / 6 + 8) - 3 = 7

In order to find for the number, we solve for the value of x. The first step is to multiple 6, on both sides of the equation in order to cancel out x/6

(x / 6 + 8) - 3 = 7

6((x / 6 + 8) - 3) = 7 (6)

x + 48 - 18 = 42

x + 30 = 42

Transpose 30 on the other side of the equation, hence we must take note that in transposing  a number, the sign changes.

x = 42 -30

x = 12

Check:

(12/6 + 8) - 3 = 7

10 -3 = 7

7 = 7

Final answer:

x = 12
