A number is considered to be irrational if it cannot be express as the ratio between to real integers. This means that it cannot be written in a fractional form, containing a numerator and a denominator.  Common examples of irrational numbers include negative values inside a square root sign, since negative numbers do not have a square root, and the answer is considered to be a complex number. Mathematical constants are also considered to be irrational, these may include pi, euler's number and the golden ratio.
