atomic number of carbon is 6 and its electronic configuration is 1s2 , 2s2 , 2p2. Here, for attaining noble gas configuration by carbon either it has to loose four electrons and makes a cation having +4 charge or it has to gain 4 electrons and makes a anion with -4 charge . But the loss or gain of electrons is not easy Because of very high energy involved . So , it generally prefers covalent bonding .
