Let the number of dimes be x
And, number of quarters be y
Then, according to question
x + y = 240 ….1
We know, 1 dime = $0.10
1 quarter = $0.25
0.10x + 0.25y = 45 …2
Now, Multiplying equation 2 by 10, we get
x + 2.5y = 450 …3
Subtracting equation 1 from 3, we get
x + 2.5y - x - y = 450 - 240
1.5y = 210
y = 210/1.5
y = 140
Now, Putting value of y in equation 1, we get
x + 140 = 240
x = 240 - 140
x = 100
So,coin collector has 100 dimes and 140 quarters.
