The most superficial abdominal muscle that runs from the ribs to the pubis is the rectus abdominis muscle. The rectus abdominis is a long strap muscle located at the anterior abdominal wall. It extends along the whole length of the anterior abdomen. The structure of the muscle is broader along its superior portion near the ribs. It lies close to the midline of the abdomen, and is separated by a fibrous band called the linea alba. The rectus abdominis muscle is commonly called as the “six-pack abs." They originate from the pubic symphysis and pubic crest, runs along the midline of the abdomen, and inserts into the area of the xiphoid process, into the 5-7 costal cartilages. The rectus abdominis acts by flexing the trunk, compressing the abdominal viscera, stabilizing, and controlling the pelvic tilt. The rectus abdominis is enclosed by the rectus sheath, which is composed of the aponeuroses of the external oblique, internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles.
