Prior to 1954, the territory now known as Vietnam was under French colonial rule. Vietnam was part of French Indochina, along with Laos and Cambodia, and it was a French protectorate. The French colonization lasted for much of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century until the First Indochina War (1946–1954), which led to the defeat of the French and the division of Vietnam into North and South along the 17th parallel.
