Given the following functions:

y = 2x + 1

y = 4x -3

Find the value of x which makes the functions equal.

Solution:

Equate the two solutions, as an equivalent of each other.

2x + 1 = 4x - 3

Combine like terms and solve for the value of x.

2x + 1 = 4x - 3

1 + 3 = 4x - 2x

2x = 4

Divide both sides of the equation by 2 in order to get the value of x

x = 2

Check:

Substitute the value of x in the equation.

y =2(2) + 1

y = 5

y =4(2) -3

y =5
