D. Executive

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, passed in 1964, significantly increased the power of the President of the United States, who is part of the executive branch of the federal government. This resolution was passed by Congress in the wake of alleged attacks on U.S. naval vessels by North Vietnamese forces in the Gulf of Tonkin. It granted the President authority to use military force in Southeast Asia without a formal declaration of war by Congress. This allowed the President, at the time Lyndon B. Johnson, and later Richard Nixon, to conduct military operations in Vietnam with a high degree of autonomy.
