Lets try and put the numbers on one side and have the unknown values of x in other side. If a variable or number changes side, it will have its sign switched from a + into a - and vice versa.

5x=7-1.5

5x=5.5

Divide both sides with 5.

5x/5 = 5.5/5

x=1.1
