The scientist that discovered atoms contain electrons is Sir John Joseph Thomson.

In 1897 's Sir John Joseph Thomson, was working on cathode ray tube, when he deduced that it contains a negatively charged particle which he called as the electrons.

Although J.J. Thomson was the one who discovered the existence of electrons, Arthur Schuster was the one who estimated the mass of the an electron, by measuring the deflection of cathode ray tubes due to an unknown magnetic field. The calculation was 7 years after the discovery of J.J. Thomson.
