In ancient Egyptian belief, the spiritual body is referred to as the "Ka." The Ka was one of the five parts of the soul along with the Ba, Akh, Ren, and the physical body (called the Ha). The Ka was understood as a vital essence or life force that existed from birth until after death. It was believed to be the element which differentiated the living from the dead. The Ka was necessary for sustenance in the afterlife, so the living would provide offerings of food and drink to their ancestors' Kas, often in front of a statue at the tomb that acted as a dwelling for the Ka.
