The purpose of the villi and microvilli of the small intestine and the circular folds of the large intestine , the villi and the microvilli increase intestinal absorptive surface area approximately 40-fold and 600-fold, respectively, providing exceptionally efficient absorption of nutrients in the lumen. They have enzymes also on their surface which plays important role in digestion and absorption.
