During a physical change, the particles in a substance remains unchanged, since only their physical property is being altered. The chemical composition and property of a substance during a physical change remains the same, therefore their particles also remain the same. A particle of a substance can only change if there is a chemical reaction or chemical phenomenon that is occurring in the system.

A physical change can be observed directly by looking, touching, smelling or even tasting the substance/material. A chemical change however cannot be easily determined just by seeing its physical properties, there is a need to conduct experiments in order to test if a chemical change did undergo.
