The first leader of the Soviet Union (USSR) was Vladimir Lenin. He played a pivotal role in the Russian Revolution of 1917, which led to the overthrow of the Provisional Government that had replaced the Tsarist regime. After the revolution, the Bolshevik Party, led by Lenin, took control and he became the leader of the new government. Under Lenin, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was established, which later became the leading constituent of the Soviet Union when it was formed in 1922. Lenin served as the head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924, and of the Soviet Union from its establishment until his death in 1924.
