To become positively charged a neutral atom must lose electron.

The changes in the charge of an atom is based on its electron count, whereas if a neutral atom gains another electron, it will become negatively charged and when a neutral atom loses an electron, it becomes positively charged.

Example:

Neutral Sodium Atom ( Na )= 11 protons and 11 electrons

When a sodium atom loses one or more electron, it will become

= Na +
