Let the number of girls be x

and, the number of boys be y

then, according to question:

x = y                             …..1

The number of boys is twice the number of girls when 8 girls left.

x-8/y = 1/ 2                ……2

2x - 16 = y

Now, putting value of y in equation 2 from equation 1, we get

2x -16 = x

2x - x = 16

 x = 16

So, y = 16

Hence, total students = 16 + 16 = 32

Therefore, there were 32 students in the class initially.
