Let the bigger number be X

And the smaller number be Y

X+Y=17 ……(1)

X-Y=13 …….(2)

Using substitution method:

from equation (1)

X=17-Y ….(3)

Now, substituting value of x in equation (2)

(17-Y)-Y=13

17– Y - Y=13

17–13=2Y

4=2Y

Y=2

Now, substituting value of y in equation (3)

X=17–2=15

Therefore, the bigger number is 15 and smaller number is 2.
