The relationship below explains a type of symbiosis. Read the paragraph, and then answer the questions that follow. A clown fish lives in and around the sea anemone. The clown fish has a protective mucous coating, which prevents it from being stung by the sea anemone. Since the clown fish can not be harmed by the anemone, it gains protection by living in and around the anemone. The clown fish will in return ward off any predators of the anemone to protect it's home. A. What is symbiosis? B. What type of symbiosis is this example? Explain why.

A : Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species. Sometimes a symbiotic relationship benefits both species, sometimes one species benefits at the other's expense, and in other cases neither species benefits.

B : Mutualism - The symbiotic relationship between an anemone (Heteractis magnifica) and a clownfish (Amphiron ocellaris) is a classic example of two organisms benefiting the other; the anemone provides the clownfish with protection and shelter, while the clownfish provides the anemone nutrients in the form of waste while also scaring .
