In order to solve it for a, we can just separate a in one side of the equation and everything else on the other side. Lets put the variable a on one side and the numbers and the other variables on the other side. Every variable or number that will change signs, will have their sign changed from a + into a - and vice versa.
2a+2b=P
2a=P-2b
Divide both sides with 2.
2a/2 = (P-2b)/2
a=(P-2b)/2
