Osmosis occurs through water channel proteins called aquaporins .

They  selectively conduct water molecules in and out of the cell, while preventing the passage of ions and other solutes. Also known as water channels, aquaporins are integral membrane pore proteins.

Porins are protein that form large pores in the outer membrane of the plastids , mitochondria and some bacteria allowing molecules up to the size of small proteins to pass through.
