The normal resting heart rate of an average adult is around 60 to 90 beats per minute. A heart rate that falls within the normal range implies an that the heart is functioning properly and that the individual is in good health in terms of his or her cardiovascular fitness. An elevated heart rate is natural when performing exercise, or if the individual is under strenuous conditions. Although, in terms of diseases, an elevated heart rate is a common risk factor for cardiovascular diseases or cardiovascular death. Besides the things mentioned, there are other factors that can also influence a person's heart rate such as age, body size and body orientation. Other than cardiovascular diseases, changes in the heart rate or rhythm, medically called as “arrhythmia," may also be a side effect to the exposure and ingestion of certain medications.
