let the cost of candy be x
and, cost of soda be y
Then, according to question:
2x + y = 8 ………(1)
x + y = 5.50 ………(2)
Now, using elimination method:
Subtracting equation 2 from equation 1, we get
2x + y - (x+y) = 8 - 5.50
2x + y - x - y = 2.50
x = 2.50
Now, putting value of x in equation 2, we get
2.50 + y = 5.50
y = 5.50 - 2.50
y = 3
Thus, cost of box and soda is $2.50 and $ 3 respectively.
Justification :
We can justify our solution by putting values of x and y in equation 1
2(2.50) + 3 = 8
5.0 + 3 = 8
8 = 8
Since, LHS and RHS are equal, we can say our solution is correct.
