Incarceration is also known as imprisonment.  It is a state where an individual will receive a punishment that is due to a criminal act that he/she committed. Basically, we all know that when we commit a crime, you'll likely be jailed or sent to prison, hence this can be referred to as incarceration. Prisons are built in order for people who have committed crimes to be punished for a period of time depending on the length given by the judge, thus imprisonment can take a lifetime, if you committed a violent crime, such as massacre, or murders.
