Let the present age of Kate be x

And, present age of Jan be t

Then, according to question

x = 3y     ….1                 [as Kate is 3 times old]

Kate's age 6 years ago = x -6

Jan's age 6 years ago = y -6

According to question

x- 6= 6(y-6)   [as Kate is 6 times old]

x -6 = 6y - 36

x - 6y = -30      ….2

Putting value of x from equation 1 in equation 2, we get

3y - 6y = -30

-3y = -30

y = -30/-3

y = 10

Putting value of y in equation 1

x = 3(10)

x = 30

Hence, jan is 30 years old and Kate is 10 years old.
