it means, in the straight street first point is S at which school is established then middle point is Willard's house at the point H and in the end point mall is established at the point M.
now according to the question, SH=3 miles and HM=4.5 miles

S (school) → H (house) →M (mall)
SM=SH+HM
SM=3+4.5
