Marks scored by student = 71

Maximum marks = 100

Average = 78

Let student scored x marks in second exam

Then,  (71 + x)/2 = 78

71 + x = 156

x = 156 - 71

x = 85

 

So, the student need to score 85 marks out of 100 to maintain average of 77.
