Infection is due to intoxication caused by a focal Clostridium tetani infection.

Clostridium tetani species belong to bacteria found in soil , in the faeces and in the mouth of animal . The disease is acquired when wounds become infected by the bacteria .  The spores become active and spread throughout the body producing a poison  called tetanus . The toxin then blocked the nerve signals from the spinal cord to muscles and cause generalized severe muscle spasm (lockjaw) and other things also .
