So we know that we have 17 balls numbered 1 through 17. Lets try and separate them in 2 groups. Group A will be odd numbered balls and group B will be even number balls.
Group A = {1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17}
Group B = {2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16}
We need the probability of selecting a ball that has an even number, so a ball from group B.
Group B has 8 elements. So the person has a probability 8/17 to select an even numbered ball.
