Given the statement:

20% of 6th grade students surveyed said they rode a bike to school, which is a total of 50 students.

A. Determine how many students were surveyed.

B. Determine how many students do not ride a bike to school.

Solution:

In order to determine the total number of students, we must convert first 20% into decimal. In converting a percentage into decimal, we divide the percentage by 100, hence in converting a decimal to percentage we  multiply it by 100.

=20/100

= 0.2

Now that we have the value of 20% in decimal form, we will divide it to 50

= 50 / 0.2

= 250

A. The total number of students that were surveyed is 250.

In order to determine how many students do not ride a bike to school, we subtract 50 to 250.

= 250 - 50

= 200

B. 200 students do not ride a bike to school.
