Let the money spend on food be x

And, money spend on cloths be y

So, according to question

x + y = 56 …..1

x + 18 = y …….2

Using Substitution method:

putting value of y in equation 1, we get

x + x + 18 = 56

2x + 18 = 56

2x = 56 - 18

2x = 38

x = 38/2

x = 19

Now, putting value of x in equation 2, we get

y = 19 + 18

y = 37

So, money spend on food and cloths are $19 and $37 respectively.
