Evangelista Torriceli is an Italian physicist who invented the Mercury Barometer in 1643.  It is considered to be the oldest type of barometer that was invented and its main function is to measure atmospheric pressure. It commonly consists of an upside down tube which is filled with the element mercury. The air pushes down the mercury inside the container or the vessel which in turn pushes the mercury up, and the measurement is stated based on the height by which the mercury reaches.
