D) greenhouse effect

The greenhouse effect is the process by which certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and nitrous oxide, trap heat from the sun. These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth's surface, some of it is reflected back towards space as infrared radiation (heat). The greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap the heat in the atmosphere, which in turn helps to warm the planet. This natural process is what makes life possible on Earth by keeping the planet's temperature at a comfortable level. However, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have increased concentrations of these greenhouse gases, leading to more heat being trapped and thus contributing to global warming.
