Mercury is included in the composition of the Earth's crust, and can be naturally found along with coal deposits. It can also be found through mining of ores such as cinnabar, livingstonite, and corderoite. It is extracted through pyrometallurgical extraction. Heat is applied to the sulfide ore in the presence of air, oxygen then combines with the sulfur to form sulfur dioxide, and the metal is heated at a temperature above its boiling point.
