Of all the cells in human body, its the heart muscle cells with about 5,000 mitochondria per cell that contain far more mitochondria than any other organ in human body. The number of mitochondria reflects the energy requirement of a cell. Heart muscle cells have extra-special demand for ATP to keep the heart pumping. The number of the mitochondria varies with the cell type and functional stage.
Some different cells have different amounts of mitochondria because they need more energy. So for example, the muscle has a lot of mitochondria, the liver does too, the kidney as well, and to a certain extent, the brain, which lives off of the energy those mitochondria produce.
