When excess fertilizer drains into a lake, Eutrophication may occur, harming fish populations.

Eutrophication can be defined or is characterized as the excessive growth in algal population which commonly occurs in the sea, rivers, ponds, and lakes. The nutrients coming from the fertilizer is transferred to the body of water, which causes algal to bloom, thus, there are algals that produced toxic substance, whereas when these substances are exposed to marine organisms, especially fishes, then it may cause harm to such life forms. This can also cause problems in the natural food chain since one factor is disrupted by another.
