Lets try and express the mixed fractions as normal fractions.

1 ⅔ is expressed as a non mixed fraction like this:

Multiply 1 with the denominator and add the numerator to the result.

So 1*3+2=5. This will be the numerator.

The fraction is 5/3.

Same procedure with the other fraction as well.

5*8+3=43

The fraction is 43/8.

So we have: 5/3 + 43/8 =

Lets find the smallest common factor in order to have them both in the same denominator.

The smallest common factor between 3 and 8 is 24.

Lets divide the denominators.

24/3=8

24/8=3

The results multiply it with the respective numerator.

8*5=40(new numerator for 5/3)

3*43=129(New numerator for 43/8)

So the sum is now:

40/24 + 129/24 =

Add the numerators together:

(40+129)/24 =

=169/24
