The main reasoning behind proposing the American System was to develop a diverse and independent economy in the United States, which was at that time largely dependent on European trade and manufactured goods. Clay aimed to unify the nation's economy and bolster American economic independence, particularly after the War of 1812 showcased the country's vulnerabilities.

The American System had three key components:

1. Protective Tariffs: The introduction of high tariffs on imported goods to protect American industries from foreign competition. The idea was to encourage domestic production and consumption of American-made goods.

2. National Bank: The establishment of a National Bank to oversee monetary policy and provide a stable national currency. This would help to foster business growth and development across state lines.

3. Internal Improvements: Federal government investment in infrastructure, such as roads and canals, to improve transportation and stimulate commerce between different regions of the country.

The system aimed to create a mutually beneficial economic relationship between the different regions of the U.S.: the agricultural South and West would provide raw materials to the North, and in turn, purchase manufactured goods produced by Northern industries.
