Tightly coiled DNA is called a chromosome. In eukaryotic cells, such as those of plants, animals, and fungi, the DNA is wrapped around proteins called histones, which help it condense into a highly compacted structure. This tightly coiled form of DNA, when it's at its highest level of compaction during the cell division processes of mitosis and meiosis, is what we see as chromosomes.
