Carbon Dioxide is an essential chemical component that is needed in order to yield the products of photosynthesis which is oxygen and glucose. In order to cleary have  deep understanding of the purpose of carbon dioxide, we simply look at the formula for photosynthesis.

Formula for Photosynthesis:

6CO2 + 6H20 + Sun's Solar Energy → 6O2 + C6H1206

Six carbon dioxide molecules plus six water molecules plus sun's solar energy will yield six oxygen molecule and glucose.

It can be seen that carbon dioxide is a reactant of photosynthesis, which is significantly important to make the chemical process possible.
