Nitrification is a biological process that mainly encompasses the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite, then it is followed by the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate that occurs in living organisms.  Nitrification is considered to be an important part of the nitrogen cycle due to the fact that most plants prefer to absorb the chemical nitrate in soil or water.  This does not only contribute to the growth and development of plants but also has other beneficial effects on the biotic ecosystem in which the process occurs.
