Collenchyma is a supporting tissue composed of more or less elongated living cells with unevenly thickened, nonlignified primary walls. It is in regions of primary growth in stems and leaves.

Collenchyma cells are elongated, living cells that occur especially in peripheral positions in leaves and stems of eudicotyledons where they provide mechanical support while they are still growing . At maturity, the cell walls are thick and usually non-lignified, with the thickening often unevenly distributed.
