An atom is the smallest unit of matter that composed all chemical elements that is known. There have been many theories and concepts that lead to the general definition of atom, whereas it is considered to be an indivisible, and indestructible unit. This means that atoms can neither be created nor destroyed. Hence, atoms can combined in order to form compounds, and if these compounds get destroyed, in turns back to atoms.
