During World War II, the major participants took sides with either the Allies or the Axis powers. The Allies primarily consisted of the United Kingdom (and its Commonwealth nations), the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and France. Many other countries also joined the Allies, and their composition changed over the course of the war.
The Axis powers were led by Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries were joined by others such as Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, and at different points, they received support from other nations as well.
