The gasoline gauge on a van initially read 1/3 full. When 10 gallons were added to the tank, the gauge read 3/4 full. How many more gallons are needed to fill the tank?

Given : 

Let the total gallon of gas be x

Then, 

Intial gasoline = 1/ 3 x

Now, after 10 gallons of gas is added, gasoline is 3/ 4 x

So,

3/ 4 x - 1/ 3 x = 10

(9 - 4)x/12= 10

5x/12 = 10

x = 10 × 12/5

x = 24

 

Hence, 24 gallons of gas is needed to fill the tank.
