Lets multiply 6 with the bracket (4-k):

6(4 - k) = 6*4 -k*6 =

= 24-6k

Now we have:

18-6k=24-6k

Lets put the variables on one side and the numbers on the other side. Every variable or number that will change sides, will have their sign changed from a + into a - and vice versa.

-6k+6k=24-18

0 = 6

That is not true, so the k can take values from all the numbers because in the end it cancels itself.
