Let the number of 49 cent stamp be x

And, number of 34 cent stamp be y

Then, according to question

x + y = 26 ….1

0.49x + 0.34y = 11.39 ….2

Now, from equation 1

y = 26 - x ….3

putting value of y in equation 2, we get

0.49x + 0 34(26-x) = 11.39

0.49x + 8.84 - 0.34x = 11.39

0.15x = 11.39 - 8.84

0.15x = 2.55

x = 2.55/0.15

x = 17

Now, putting value of x in equation 3, we get

y = 26 - 17

y = 9

Thus, Sarah and Owen Herbert purchased 17 49cent stamps and 9 34cent stamps.
